Blue Ice Mountain
$70.00 – $253.00
Take a look at the modeling images below. What you see is a unique form of blue ice made possible by the weight of 4,900 feet of overlying glacial ice.
The tremendous pressure created by the overlying ice and snow produces a unique form of crystals so dense they are entirely free of cracks and air bubbles.
These crystal prisms absorb all color bands of light except the blue wave length which penetrates the ice but is then reflected back out.
The Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska is home to the Sawyer Glacier which is composed of this uniquely beautiful form of ice.
The ships that visit the Sawyer Glacier travel through canyons that were carved from solid granite by the weight of this glacier.
Hundreds of waterfalls cascade down the sides of the fjord which naturalist John Muir compared to the sheer granite cliffs of Yosemite, declaring this region of Alaska to be even more spectacular.
