Europa, discovered by astronomer Galileo in 1610, was surveyed by the Galileo space probe launched aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1989.

The design is inspired by the probes discovery of Europa’s frozen ice surface and 60 mile deep ocean. The probe was later plunged into Jupiter to protect Europa’s oceans from contamination.
