Diamond dust is a weather phenomenon similar to thin fog but made up of tiny ice crystals.

It’s most common in the Arctic and Antarctica, but can occur anywhere very cold air mixes with overlying warmer moist air.

Every winter I spend a few evenings skiing at Mt. Ashland.

After the mountain closed late one night I grabbed a sandwich from the truck and walked out onto the slopes.

The temperature was six degrees and the air was gently streaming up the mountain past the lights illuminating the terrain.

A continuous stream of sparkling diamond ice crystals were moving up the slope in perfect silence.

The night sky was filled with stars and the diamond dust experience became a moment in my life I’ll never forget.
