This piece is inspired by the otherworldly experience of scuba diving kelp forests at Catalina Island.

I’ll never forget one dive where thousands of schooling fish swam in a circling column that extended thirty feet to the surface.

Sitting on the bottom inside this living tornado I emptied an entire tank of air watching their silver bodies flash in the shafts of light that penetrated the giant strands of kelp.

Kelp is recognized as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth. Giant kelps can grow to 213 ft. in length.
