White and blue granular glass chips are fused to a molten gather of clear then a uniform glass ball is blown producing pacific blue.
The finished piece is filled with beach sand and a variety of shells before a glass foot is applied to permanently seal the design.
Gentle shaking produces different scenes and the colored glass exterior creates highlights and shadows similar to tide pools.
The first appearance of the term “beachcomber” was in Herman Melville’s Omoo in 1847.
Europeans on South Pacific islands “combed” the beach for anything useful in trade. Most were sailors who had jumped ship.
