The collage technique was also used by 10th century Japanese calligraphers.

A black glass central element is first sculpted to provide a contrasting background for the brighter design elements.

A second gather of clear casing glass is then applied to provide a layer on which to “float” the collage applique.

The collage design elements are then built up in layers by combining shards of bright colored glass with colored glass fusings.

Tiny bubbles are arrayed around the design before a final glass casing is applied and paddled into its final shape.
